AUGUSTA, Maine — Crews are on the scene of a large fire that started early Friday morning at a multi-unit building on 36 Northern Ave. in Augusta.

The Augusta Fire Chief tells CBS 13, they believe everyone in the building has been accounted for. Crews helped rescue 23 people who were inside the building. Twenty-seven people live at the 18-unit apartment building. Initially, firefighters did not know whether everyone made it out safely, but they now say they believe everyone has been located. Seven people were taken to the hospital for burns and smoke inhalation.

Firefighters say the building has collapsed and is destroyed. Ten fire departments are on the scene, in addition to the State Fire Marshals Office and detectives with the Augusta Police Department.

Tenants were taken to a nearby hotel, where the Red Cross is now assisting them.
