ELLSWORTH, Maine — Two men accused of being involved in a robbery last spring at an Ellsworth supermarket were among 16 people indicted last week by the Hancock County grand jury.
Curtis D. Knudsen, 23, of Gouldsboro and Michael E. Robbins, 23, of Sorrento each were indicted Dec. 4 on two felony counts of robbery and one felony count of stealing drugs.
According to Ellsworth police, the pair and Bruce Wilbur, 23, of Hancock made off with four bottles of 15-milligram OxyContin pills from the local Shaw’s Supermarket pharmacy on March 31. According to police, Wilbur walked into the store, covered his face with clothing and handed a note to a pharmacy clerk demanding the drugs.
Police arrested Knudsen and Robbins several days after the incident but have not publicly indicated what the men did by participating in the alleged drug robbery. If convicted, the two men each face up to 10 years in prison and a maximum fine of $20,000 on each robbery charge and up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine on the charge of stealing drugs.
Wilbur later confessed to police and then agreed to serve at least six months behind bars as a condition of being admitted to drug court, which is geared toward helping criminal offenders treat their addictions, his attorney has said.
Also indicted Dec. 4 were two Sullivan residents accused of being involved in an assault this past summer.
Rachel Dwyer, 41, and William Gatcomb, 44, both of Sullivan, were arrested June 30 after police responded to a report that two people had been stabbed in an altercation at a home on Ashville Road in Sullivan, near the Gouldsboro town line. Dwyer and Gatcomb each were indicted last week on two charges of aggravated assault.
Another indictee, James R. Eggleston, 34, a transient, was arrested in September after he allegedly broke into a convenience store in Ellsworth. Police accuse Eggleston of burglarizing the Hilltop on the Run store on Route 3 in the early morning hours of Aug. 27 and stealing an undisclosed amount of items. Eggleston was indicted on charges of burglary, theft and criminal mischief.
Also indicted Dec. 4 was a Holden man accused of improperly using credit cards that belonged to an Ellsworth funeral home, where he was an employee. Kenneth C. Hutchings, 32, allegedly stole gas station credit cards owned by Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Home and racked up more than $9,000 in bills on the cards, Ellsworth police have said.
Hutchings was indicted on charges of theft, violating conditions of release and misuse of identification.
