BIDDEFORD, Maine — The Maine Board of Licensure in Medicine reprimanded a Biddeford doctor after receiving a complaint alleging, in part, that he didn’t order yearly mammograms for a patient with a family history of breast cancer.

The complaint against physician Nicholas Handanos also said he failed to immediately refer the patient to the emergency room after he diagnosed her with congestive heart failure.

According to a Thursday morning announcement by the board, Handanos accepted two board reprimands and a $1,000 fine for the shortcomings.

In a consent agreement with the board signed by Handanos on Dec. 9, the physician agreed to follow up “on all patient testing as indicated in the record and shall urgently order testing when presented with symptoms that call for urgent testing,” the board announcement states, in part.

“Dr. Handanos admitted the board had sufficient evidence from which it could conclude that he failed to offer the patient follow-up mammography examinations and failed to order urgent testing for the patient,” the announcement continued.

The board reports all disciplinary actions to the National Practitioner Data Bank, the Health Integrity and Protection Data Bank, and the Federation of State Medical Boards Action Data Bank.

The Maine Board of Licensure in Medicine is composed of six physicians and three public representatives who are appointed by the governor.
