Sports Illustrated to honor York’s Kate Marshall

Sports Illustrated will honor York High School’s Kate Marshall as its High School Athlete of the Month on Dec. 18 at the school.

This award honors those high school athletes who best embody, in character and performance, in character and performance, the qualities of service, dedication, integrity and athletic ability, according to a release from SI.

As a sophomore at York High School, Marshall plays midfielder for both her school soccer team and regional league, Seacoast United. She is also fighting a lifelong battle with cystic fibrosis.

Marshall’s father, Patrick Marshall, started a biotech company called StratActivity that was involved in developing the FDA approved drug Kalydeco – a major breakthrough in the disease. Though Kalydeco is designed for 4 percent of those affected, Patrick Marshall has made it his life’s work to create another drug for his daughter’s specific genotype.

Husson’s Frost gains New England honor

Husson University men’s soccer standout Phil Frost has been named to the 2014 NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division III Men’s All-New England Region Fourth Team.

Frost, a forward from Bangor, was named First Team All-North Atlantic Conference after finishing the season tied for third in the conference with 11 goals and was fourth with 28 points.

The honor is Frost’s second All-New England honor, having garnered second-team honors in 2012.

Sharper indicted for rape in New Orleans

Former All-Pro safety Darren Sharper now faces six rape charges in three states after he was indicted Friday by a New Orleans grand jury on two counts of aggravated rape.

Sharper previously was charged with two rapes each in Los Angeles County and Tempe, Ariz. He has been in Los Angeles County jail since Feb. 27.

On Friday, Sharper was indicted along with two other men for alleged rapes in New Orleans in 2013. Erik Nunez and Brandon Licciardi, a former New Orleans law enforcement officer, also were indicted by the grand jury.

Sharper and Nunez are both accused of sexually assaulting two women in September 2013, and Sharper faces another rape count stemming from an alleged incident in August 2013.

Penguins’ Crosby to miss two games

The Pittsburgh Penguins said Friday that they do not believe center Sidney Crosby has the mumps, but he will be held out of the next two games as a precaution.

The right side of Crosby’s face looked swollen during the Friday morning skate and he said he has not felt well lately. After undergoing tests, doctors thought it best that he sit out.

“There is no indication at this time that this is the mumps, but we are going to hold him out as a precaution,” Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford said. “We’ll have additional test results in a few days.”

The Penguins play host to the Calgary Flames on Friday night and travel to Columbus to face the Blue Jackets on Saturday night.

There has been a mumps outbreak in the NHL during the past few weeks. Crosby missed practice on Thursday with an unspecified illness.

NFL fines Redskins’ Clark $22,050

Washington Redskins safety Ryan Clark was fined $22,050 for striking an opponent too high, and Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Tamba Hali and Arizona Cardinals defensive tackle Tommy Kelly were fined $16,537 for illegal hits on quarterbacks.

Those reportedly were the most significant fines by the NFL on Friday for games last weekend.

Clark was punished for his hit on St. Louis Rams tight end Jared Cook in the first quarter Sunday. The hit drew a personal foul penalty.

Cook was checked for a concussion but returned and caught two touchdown passes.

Hali was docked for his low hit on Arizona quarterback Drew Stanton last week. Kelly was fined for roughing Kansas City QB Alex Smith.
