HAMPDEN, Maine — A propane tank at the Dead River facility on Western Avenue tipped over late Monday morning, causing a leak, officials said.

Hampden Fire Lt. Jason Lundstrom said the 1,000-gallon propane tank was on a dolley and the dolley tipped over.

“When the dolley tipped over it broke the pressure valve off,” Lundstrom said.

Although Lundstrom didn’t have an exact amount as to how much propane leaked, he said it was at least 150 gallons.

The public was never in any danger and no homes in the area were evacuated, he added.

“Dead River trains for this, and we train with them,” Lundstrom said. “The guys are very aware of what to do. Employees themselves were able to plug the leak in the tank in a short amount of time.”

The Maine Department of Environmental Protection assisted Hampden firefighters at the scene.
