ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A kitten that vanished from its home in New Mexico and showed up in Maine less than a week later is now back home.

Surrounded by TV cameras, animal rescuers brought Spice to an Albuquerque animal welfare shelter.

The 6-month-old kitten darted out of her home on Halloween night. Five days later, she showed up on the steps of a thrift store on Saint John Street in Portland in a duffel bag. Members of the Animal Refuge League of Maine who traveled with Spice to New Mexico last week were able to figure out that she came from New Mexico because of a microchip inside her.

“Spice is the perfect example of how important microchipping is for our pets,” said Jeana Roth with the Animal Refuge League. “It’s a great component of being a responsible pet owner.”

How she made it from Albuquerque, New Mexico to Portland is still a mystery.
