MILFORD, Maine — A 17-year-old Milford girl was taken to the hospital early Wednesday after she was struck by a vehicle while walking along Route 2.
The accident happened about 6 a.m. near Weymouth’s Garage shortly after emergency dispatchers began fielding calls from motorists reporting that someone was wandering in and out the travel lanes on Route 2, Penobscot County Sheriff’s Deputy Ray Goodspeed said Wednesday evening.
Minutes later, the girl — whose name was withheld because of her age — was struck by the mirror and possibly the running board of the passenger side of a southbound vehicle, Goodspeed said.
The driver, who was attempting to get around a vehicle that was stopped ahead of him, was unable to avoid hitting the girl.
The teenager was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center for treatment of injuries that were not considered life threatening, he said.
It was not yet clear Wednesday why the teenager was weaving on and off the roadway.
“We’re still working on that right now,” Goodspeed said.
The accident remains under investigation, he said.
