CARIBOU, Maine — Parts of northwestern Maine could see up to a foot of fresh snow by late Thursday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.

The weather service’s Caribou office issued a winter storm warning Wednesday night for southeast Aroostook County effective through Thursday afternoon.

During that period, forecasters expect accumulations of 8 inches to a foot of snow. Affected communities include Houlton, Hodgdon, Sherman and Smyrna Mills.

Meanwhile, the rest of Aroostook County, along with northern Somerset and Piscataquis counties, is under a winter weather advisory expected to last into Thursday, according to the weather service.

Forecasters said that 8 to 10 inches of snow, along with freezing rain and rain, likely would fall throughout the day.

Central Piscataquis, northern Penobscot and southeast Aroostook counties also are under the advisory, but those areas were expected to see less in terms of precipitation.

Also under a winter weather advisory effective through Thursday afternoon were southern Somerset, northern Franklin and central Somerset counties, the weather service’s Gray office said.

Those areas could see from 4 to 8 inches of snow as a mix of rain and snow transitions to snow overnight.

The wintry mix already had started making for treacherous road conditions by mid-afternoon Wednesday.

Both lanes of Route 11 north of Patten were closed to traffic Wednesday after a tractor-trailer overturned in heavy snow about 3 p.m., according to Maine State Police.

The truck that rolled over was hauling lumber, which spilled onto the roadway, according to Maine Department of Public Safety Spokesman Stephen McCausland. No injuries were reported.

Route 11 was closed between Routes 212 and 227, 12 miles north of Patten and was expected to remain closed for several hours Wednesday evening as the truck was moved and cargo cleared from the roadway, according to McCausland.

Motorists were advised to detour around the accident by way of Route 212, and state police cautioned motorists that road conditions were expected to deteriorate overnight because of falling snow and freezing rain.
