BRUNSWICK, Maine — A Portland man was in critical condition at Maine Medical Center on Thursday afternoon after his car crashed earlier in the day on Interstate 295.

Christopher Doran, 35, of Portland suffered a serious head injury in the crash.

Doran was apparently exiting the highway at Exit 28 about 7:45 a.m., when the 2007 Subaru he was driving left the roadway and crashed into several trees, according to Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

McCausland said it appears Doran may have turned suddenly to take the exit and overcorrected.

Freeport and Brunswick fire and rescue crews responded to the crash and extricated Doran from the car, which was demolished.

Freeport Fire Chief Darrel Fournier said a LifeFlight of Maine helicopter was called but was unavailable.

Freeport rescue workers took Doran to Maine Medical Center in Portland for treatment of a serious head injury, according to Deputy Chief Don Koslosky of the Brunswick Fire Department.

Doran was listed in critical condition at 3:45 p.m., according to a hospital spokeswoman.

Exit 28 northbound was closed for three hours while the crash site was cleared and the crash reconstructed. Traffic on I-295 was not affected, McCausland said.
