WISCASSET, Maine — An Indiana man has been extradited to Wiscasset for allegedly posing as a Maine high school student on Facebook and convincing a Lincoln County minor to send him sexually explicit photographs.
A U.S. marshal on Nov. 8 brought Danny Wayne Douglas, 47, of Thorntown, Indiana, to Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset, where he is being held without bail.
A Lincoln County grand jury indicted Douglas on Dec. 2 on charges of sexual exploitation of a minor, a Class B felony. He will be arraigned in Lincoln County Superior Court on Jan. 29.
Douglas came to the attention of the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office in April. A mother contacted the sheriff’s office after discovering text messages that raised concerns that someone was trying to take advantage of her cognitively disabled 17-year-old daughter.
According to an affidavit of the investigating officer, Detective Scott Hayden, the minor and Douglas met in an online chat room and became Facebook friends. Douglas told the minor that he was a 17-year-old high school student in Maine.
Hayden interviewed the minor, who acknowledged sending Douglas sexually explicit photos of herself and texts. The mother reported that Douglas and the minor exchanged approximately 1,300 messages, Hayden said in the affidavit.
Douglas asked the minor to perform sexual acts, according to messages included in the affidavit.
Hayden traced Douglas’ cellphone number and discovered that he was a 47-year-old man from Indiana. Douglas’ extradition from Indiana was requested by Assistant District Attorney Andrew Wright in September.
The Dec. 2 indictment said Douglas “did intentionally or knowingly employ, solicit, entice, persuade, use or compel … a minor, to engage in sexually explicit conduct.”
Douglas faces a maximum of 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $20,000.
