AUGUSTA, Maine — A local man who was convicted of rape in 1997 was arrested on Tuesday after an alleged assault and a lengthy standoff, police said.
Lorne Sherwood, 45, attempted to sexually assault a 32-year-old woman at his Water Street residence, according to Augusta police Lt. Kevin Lully.
When police went to Sherwood’s home Monday night, Sherwood was uncooperative, and at one point made threats, stating, “what will happen will happen, and this is not going to end well,” according to Lully.
Officers found Sherwood standing on the roof outcrop off the front of his apartment building before he retreated inside after several failed attempts to negotiate with him, according to Lully.
Police continued to monitor the situation from a distance, and at noon Tuesday, officers were able to get Sherwood to answer the door at the residence and take him into custody, Lully said.
Sherwood was charged with assault, criminal threatening, creating a police standoff and violating his probation. He was taken to Kennebec County Jail.
