WALDOBORO, Maine — Gunner, a canine for the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, tracked down his second suspect in two days.
On Friday, Gunner tracked down a man suspected of stealing nearly $1,000 worth of goods from a Wal-Mart in Thomaston. On Saturday, he was able to track down a person who had fled the scene of a car crash.
Shortly before 7 p.m., Waldoboro police in neighboring Lincoln County asked for assistance in locating a driver who had fled a motor vehicle that had gone off the road.
Upon arrival, Knox County Deputy Jeremy Joslyn was informed that the registered owner of the vehicle lived a short distance from the scene. One of the officers checked the residence and the people there said the registered owner was not home.
Deputy Joslyn conducted what was necessary to obtain a scent for his dog Gunner to track. Once Gunner had a scent, he lead Joslyn in and out of the woods along the road and then a short distance later to the front door of a residence previously checked. Upon further questioning, the registered owner came to the door and admitted to Sgt. Jamie Wilson of Waldoboro Police that he was the one driving and crashed his vehicle.
Bernard Sweeney, 55, of Waldoboro was arrested and charged with operating under the influence and leaving the scene of a motor vehicle crash.
Sweeney was taken to the Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset.
