Master Gardener training
BANGOR — Enrollment for the 2015 Master Gardener Volunteers training course in Penobscot
County is now open at the University of Maine Cooperative Extension. Extension horticulturist Kate Garland, will collaborate with experts from around the state to present a 51-hour course on sustainable horticulture topics that will include botany, plant propagation, soils, composting,
landscape design, vegetable gardening, pesticide safety, tree fruits, insects and plant diseases, ecology, plant selection, and more.
Classes will run in a split session format. Weekly training sessions will begin in mid-February through May and will resume for September.
Spring sessions will take place 5-8 p.m. Tuesdays with the exception of three Saturday
morning sessions and on Wednesday evenings in September.

Fundraiser for ill child
BANGOR — Tripp Murray, 3, whose cancer was found to be out of remission in September, will undergo treatments for a year beginning in January.
Some of the top bands in Maine have volunteered their time and talents for a benefit concert to be held 1-9 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 1, at Bangor Elks BPOE 244, 108 Odlin Road.
The event also will include an auction, a 50/50 raffle and a food table. Admission will be by suggested donation of $10, although any amount may be dontated to help Tripp and his family.
Those unable to attend the event may donate at any Bangor Savings Bank to the savings account of Tripp Murray, or you mail checks and money orders made out to Tripp Murray or Kim Tripp to: Tripp Murray, P.O. Box 1343, Bangor ME 04402.
Historical society meeting
BREWER — Brewer Historical Society will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 13, at Brewer First Methodist Church Meeting Room, 40 South Main St. Henry Wiswell will speak about the Barbour Shipyard and family. The meeting is open to the public. Refreshments will be served.
Relay for Life
BREWER — Put on your fancy suit or party dress and shake off that winter chill. Join Relay For Life of Penobscot 8 p.m.-12:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, at Jeff’s Catering Saturday, 15 Littlefield Road, for a cocktail party to raise money for the American Cancer Society. Bring your dancing shoes to warm up the dance floor, bid on items in the silent auction and take photos in the photo booth.
Tickets are $15 per person before the event, $20 at the door.

BREWER — The Penobscot County Republican Committee announced that it will hold its biennial election of officers at 6:15 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 15, at Jeff’s Catering, 15 Littlefield Road in the East-West Industrial Park.
Any registered Republican may attend and learn how to become active in the party in their community. Only county committee members of record will be eligible to vote.

Committee appointment
HAMPDEN — State Rep. Jim Davitt of Hampden has been appointed to serve on the Legislature’s Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee.
The committee oversees policy relating to the Departments of Public Safety and Corrections, the Maine Emergency Management Agency, law enforcement, criminal law and firearms.
Davitt, a Vietnam veteran, has practiced law in Maine, Maryland and Washington, D.C. He teaches in the at the University of Maine at Augusta Justice Studies Program. He is serving his first term in the Maine House and represents Hampden and Newburgh.
