CARIBOU, Maine — While no communities set any new records for low temperatures Monday night, much of the state woke up to subzero temperatures Tuesday.

According to the National Weather Service’s Caribou forecast center, the St. John Valley saw the lowest of the wind chill readings, with Frenchville hitting 39 degrees below zero and Madawaska at minus 29.

Winds were expected to be calm throughout the day Tuesday and the weather service was expected to lift wind chill warnings and advisories that had been posted throughout the state.

Temperatures weren’t as bitter in the southern part of the state, according to the weather service’s Gray forecast center, with Augusta checking in with a low of 1 below while Portland’s low was a balmy 4 degrees.

Temperatures throughout the state Tuesday were expected to remain frigid, with highs struggling to stay above zero in Aroostook County and in the single digits in Bangor and points south.
