WATERVILLE, Maine —- The Colby College men’s basketball team had four players with 19 points or more in a wild 99-94 non-conference victory over Husson University on Tuesday night at Wadsworth Gymnasium.
The Mules improve to 7-5, while Husson drops to 8-2 as its seven-game winning streak was snapped.
Colby’s Chris Hudnut, after missing Saturday’s loss at Maine-Farmington with an injury, was welcomed back with team-highs of 26 points, 14 rebounds, and six assists. He was 10-for-15 from the field and had 12 defensive boards.
Luke Westman shot 7-for-8 from the field for 22 points and five rebounds for Colby. Ryan Jann was 7-for-12 from the field on the way to 20 points, five boards, and four assists. Sam Willson also was strong with 19 points on 8-for-12 shooting and five rebounds.
The Eagles also had three players with 20 points or more. Trevon Butler finished with 27 points, nine rebounds, seven steals, and three assists. Raheem Anderson added 22 points, six assists and five rebounds. Eli Itkin came off the bench and went 6-for-7 from 3-point range on the way to 22 points. Aaron Willis had early foul trouble and had 12 points.
Husson had motivation to win the game. Eagle head coach Warren Caruso had 399 career wins heading into the contest.
Husson hosts Maine Maritime Academy at 1 p.m. Saturday at Newman Gym in Bangor.
In a game that was close most of the way, Colby never trailed in the contest. The Mules led by as much as 15 points at 38-23, but Husson chipped away and Colby only led 51-45 at intermission.
The Eagles cut the margin to one point on two occasions (62-61 and 64-63) in the second half. With an 80-77 lead with 5:55 to play, Colby used a 12-4 scoring run to go up 92-81 with 1:59 to go. The Eagles used a spirited comeback to get the final margin to five points in the final 30 seconds.
Thomas 81, UMF 73
At Waterville, Levi Barnes poured in 30 points to power Thomas by UMaine-Farmington.
He hit 10-of-14 shots, 6-of-8 from 3-point land.
Nick Hilton paced UMF with 24 points and Uriah Bulley added 10 points and 9 rebounds.
Bates 60, Brandeis 55
At Lewiston, Mike Boornazian scored 17 points and Graham Safford added 12, including the 1,000th of his career, to lead the Bates by Brandeis.
The Bobcats (9-2) overcame a game-high 28-point effort by Brandeis center Jordan Cooper. John Powell added 12 points and seven rebounds for the Judges (5-6).
Cooper made 1-of-2 free throws and then hit a jumper with nine seconds to go, but Safford was 4-for-4 at the free-throw line in the final 26 seconds to secure Bates’ second win in a row.
Bates’ Adam Philpott added 12 points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
Women’s Basketball
MMA 58, Daniel Webster 50
At Nashua, N.H., Maine Maritime Academy held off Daniel Webster in the first ever meeting between the two programs.
Mary Badeen scored a game-high 26 points to lead the Mariners in the win, while adding seven rebounds. Jillian Perron added a double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds.
Kristi Willey just missed a double with nine points and a game-best 15 boards for the Mariners, while Maggie McConkey chipped in with nine points.
Kayla Free and Natasha Santana scored 13 points each to lead the Eagles.
UMF 72, Thomas 51
At Waterville, UMaine-Farmington rolled to a 23-point halftime lead and improved to 4-6.
Kelly Pomerleau paced UMF with 16 points and Lindsay Ranquist added 13. Kennadi Grover chipped in with 10 points and Bridget Humphrey grabbed 8 rebounds.
Ashleigh Gagne paced Thomas (1-9) with 11 points and Katie McAllister put in 10.
UNE 70, Wentworth 48
At Boston, the University of New England compiled a 39-5 stretch in the secnd half to surge past Wentworth Institute of Technology.
The Nor’easters(6-2) were paced by junior Alanna Vose, who dropped in 20 points (15 after halftime) with all five of her field goals coming from behind the 3-point arc. First-year guard Sam MacDonald came off the UNE bench and posted a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds. Junior Meghan Gribbin added nine points to go with five assists and three steals.
Carly Rogers led Wentworth (3-8) with 14 points and 12 rebounds.
Bowdoin 70, Emmanuel 49
At Boston, Bowdoin dominated the second half in the win over Emmanuel.
Bowdoin is now 11-2 and Emmanuel is 5-8.
Bowdoin’s balanced attack featured four players scoring in double-figures, led by Sara Binkhorst’s 19 points, four rebounds and four assists. Marle Curle finished with 17 points and seven boards. Megan Phelps and Shannon Brady chipped in with 13 and 10 points, respectively, in the win.
