GORHAM, Maine — Chandler Guerrette nailed a jumper with six seconds left in overtime to help the Husson University Eagles knock off the University of Southern Maine Huskies 79-77 in a women’s basketball contest Wednesday night.
USM had a final chance to win or tie it, but Taylor Flood’s attempt missed with two seconds left.
Gretchen Anderson gave the Huskies at 77-75 lead when she hit two free throws with 50 seconds left, but Stephanie Comstock scored off a Guerrette assist 11 seconds later to tie it.
USM missed on its next attempt before Guerrette’s winning shot.
Husson snapped an 18-game winning streak against USM by posting its first victory over the Huskies since 1994. USM owns the series 34-13.
Husson snapped a two-game losing streak and is now 5-4 while USM suffered its third straight loss and is 6-6.
Guerrette finished with 21 points, 5 rebounds and six assists to pace the Eagles. Samira Cruz chipped in with 17 points and 4 assists. Comstock chipped in with 13 points while Katy Brochu and Victoria McIntyre each added 10.
McIntyre also grabbed 13 rebounds, but USM held a 48-37 team edge.
Megan Pelletier poured in 33 points and had 10 rebounds to lead the Huskies. Rebecca Knight, Ella Ramonas, Stephanie Gallagher and Flood each added 8 points.
Men’s Basketball
Wisconsin 62, Purdue 55
Frank Kaminsky recorded a game-high 21 points as the Badgers edged away late to defeat the visiting Boilermakers in Big Ten play.
Josh Gasser contributed 15 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, as Wisconsin (15-1, 3-0 Big Ten) extended its winning streak to eight games. Traevon Jackson added 13 points and a pair of steals for the Badgers, who went 25-of-31 from the free-throw line.
Guard Jon Octeus led the way with a season-high 15 points to go along with eight rebounds for Purdue (10-6, 2-1), which shot 51 percent from the field.. A.J. Hammons and Isaac Haas each scored 11 while leading scorer Kendall Stephens, hampered by foul trouble, added seven points for the Boilermakers.
Purdue led by as much as five and shot 54.2 percent in the first half, but Kaminsky scored 10 as Wisconsin worked itself back in front 28-27 at intermission. Gasser drained 3-pointer and Jackson converted a three-point play early in the second half as the Badgers pushed their lead to 34-28.
Syracuse 46, Georgia Tech 45
Rakeem Christmas scored 18 points, including the go-ahead free throws with 12.6 seconds remaining, as the visiting Orange outlasted the Yellow Jackets in a defensive struggle.
Christmas finished 7-of-17 from the field and added nine rebounds for Syracuse (11-4, 2-0 ACC) and Michael Gbinije added 14 points on 6-of-11 shooting and 10 rebounds. The Orange shot 34.6 percent with Christmas and Gbinije’s teammates combining to shoot 5-of-24.
Charles Mitchell scored 17 points with 11 rebounds to lead the Yellow Jackets (9-5, 0-2). Georgia Tech, which dropped its ACC opener in overtime to Notre Dame on Saturday, shot 27.3 percent and had two chances to win on its final possession but Chris Bolden missed a 3-pointer in the final seconds and Quinton Stephens could not get a shot to the rim on the rebound.
