SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — A Friday morning fire that apparently started in the engine room severely damaged a 48-foot pleasure boat docked at South Port Marine.
The vessel, named Lollipop, lists South Portland as its home port, according to U.S. Coast Guard Lt. Scott McCann. McCann declined to release the name of the vessel’s owner.
The blaze was reported by someone in condominiums adjacent to the marina at about 11:37 a.m., drawing firefighters from Portland and South Portland to the scene, South Portland Fire Department spokesman Robb Couture said Friday afternoon. The Coast Guard also responded.
“We went to an additional alarm and all-hands call-back, and had it knocked down in about 45 minutes,” Couture said.
The lone occupant of the boat was uninjured.
“It looks like the fire probably started in the area of the engine room,” Couture said. “There was significant damage to the engine, but no structural damage. We didn’t put any holes in the actual body of the boat, but it took on water from fighting the fire.”
The boat was towed across Portland Harbor to Gowen Marine on Commercial Street, he said.
