BANGOR, Maine — A Bucksport man was arrested Tuesday morning on a charge of attempted gross sexual assault, police said.

Justin Wingate, 33, was taken into custody without incident by Bangor and Bucksport detectives at his home, according to Bangor police Sgt. Tim Cotton.

An investigation by Bangor and Bucksport police was launched earlier this month when a woman alleged she was threatened by a man while online, according to Cotton.

The man, later identified as Wingate, was demanding a sexual encounter with the woman and used threats and intimidation with intent to make her comply, the sergeant said.

Detectives were able to identify Wingate as a suspect by communicating with him over the Internet. He was arrested at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Attempted Gross Sexual Assault is a Class C felony punishable by up to five years in jail.

Police believe Wingate may have had similar contact with other individuals, the sergeant said. Anyone with information that could assist in the ongoing investigation should call Bangor police Detective Brent Beaulieu at 947-7384 ext. 5735.
