BANGOR, Maine — The Husson University Eagles took a seven-point halftime lead and then held off a University of Maine-Farmington scoring surge to beat the Beavers 66-54 in women’s basketball action Tuesday night.
A 7-2 UMF run to open the second half cut Husson’s lead to 39-37. The Eagles responded with an 8-3 surge for a 47-40 lead with 13:47 remaining and increased the lead to 11 late in the half to secure the win.
Victoria McIntyre paced Husson (7-4, 5-1 North Atlantic Conference) with 20 points, 7 rebounds and 2 steals. Samira Cruz chipped in with 13 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists. Katy Brochu contributed 8 rebounds and 6 points.
Elizabeth Ferry sparked UMF (4-9, 4-3) with 10 points and 13 rebounds while Lindsay Ranquist finished with 14 points.
MMA 66, Thomas 45
At Castine, Mary Badeen poured in 32 points to propel the Maine Maritime Academy Mariners by the Terriers.
Badeen nailed 7 of 10 3-point field goals and also recorded 8 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 steals.
Mackenzie Vosburgh chipped in with 17 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists for MMA (5-8). The Mariners led at halftime 29-17.
Ashleigh Gagne sparked Thomas of Waterville (1-12) with 10 points and Tess McClenahan added 9. Gagne also had 15 rebounds and 3 assists.
UNE 65, WNE 47
At Springfield, Massachusetts, junior guard Alanna Vose drained eight 3-pointers on the way to a career-high 29 points, leading the University of New England by Western New England University for its fourth straight win..
Vose registered 18 of her points in the last 11 minutes of the contest, and made 5-of-6 from deep in the second period. In addition to eclipsing her personal scoring-best by seven, she shared the team-lead with eight rebounds.
Sophomore Alicia Brown scored all 10 of her points in the 1st half, and finished with six rebounds to go with three blocks for UNE (9-2).
For WNE (8-4), Dorothy O’Neill scored 17 points and Emily Anderson added 10.
USM 56, RIC 49
At Gorham, junior Megan Pelletier scored a game-high 22 points and grabbed five rebounds to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies by the Rhode Island College Anchormen.
With the win, Southern Maine improves to 3-1 in the Little East and 7-7 overall. Rhode Island College drops to 1-3 in the conference and 2-11.
Pelletier scored 16 of her 23 points in the second half as Southern Maine overcame a poor first half performance to secure the conference victory and remain tied for first place. Junior Ella Ramonas added a double-double on 13 points and 10 rebounds, while chipping in with three assists and a game-high four steals. Seniors Rebecca Knight and Taylor Flood each had seven points. Knight added nine boards to help the Huskies to a 41-34 edge on the glass, while Flood had a game-high four assists.
Freshman Jess Korzec (West Brookfield, Mass./Quaboag Regional) was 6-for-12 from the field for a team-high 13 points to lead RIC.
Men’s Basketball
Fisher 90, UMM 77
At Lynn, Massachusetts, Fisher outscored the UMaine-Machias Clippers 52-38 in the second half to earn the win after trailing by one at halftime.
Tyler Shular sparked Fisher (13-4) with 18 points and O.J. Moore put in 17.
Dreu Johnson scored 17 points to lead the Clippers (6-7) and Antwan Ruise added 15. Ben Teer chipped in with 13 points while Ivory Snead and Reggie Thompson each put in 12. Ruise also had 9 rebounds.
Husson 72, UMF 52
At Newman Gym in Bangor, the Eagles used a balanced scoring attack to beat the UMaine-Farmington Beavers while improving to 10-2 overall and 6-0 in the North Atlantic Conference.
Trevon Butler scored 13 points, Aaron Willis added 12 and Raheem Anderson netted 11 for the Eagles. Butler also grabbed 9 rebounds. Matt Talbot chipped in with 8 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 blocks and 2 steals.
Husson took a 10-point halftime lead and upped it to 50-35 when Butler hit a jumper with 11:30 left in the game.
Nick Hilton paced UMF (4-9, 3-4) with 14 points and 9 rebounds. Uriah Forest-Bulley added 8 points and 8 rebounds.
Bates 60, UMPI 47
At Lewiston, Bates won its fourth game in a row, overcoming a hard-nosed UMaine-Presque Isle team at Alumni Gym.
Mike Boornazian led the Bobcats (11-2) with 17 points and four assists, to go with six rebounds and two steals. With senior point guard Graham Safford sitting the game out, sophomore Jerome Darling got the start at point guard and scored a career-high 11 points. Malcolm Delpeche added nine points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
UMPI dropped to 8-7 with its third straight loss. Chase Vicaire led the Owls with 17 points, while Maurice Harris added 11 points and three blocks. Owl starters Nick Lenhard and Brandon McGill both went scoreless, but shared the team lead with seven rebounds apiece, and Lenhard also dished out five assists.
Bates opened the game with a 20-5 run and never saw its lead threatened.
Thomas 84, MMA 73
At Castine, Eric Westbrooks scored a game-high 21 points to lead the Terriers, including going a perfect 9-9 from the line, while adding seven rebounds, four assists and a steal in the win over Maine Maritime Academy.
Justin Murray contributed 20 points, two rebounds and a steal for Thomas (6-8), while Mike Akanji scored 17 points, four rebounds and an assist.
Maine Maritime came out strong in the second half, scoring seven-unanswered points to hold a 39-35 lead, but the Terriers took back the lead just moments later when Westbrooks hit two from the line with 16:42 remaining. Thomas maintained the lead.
Tyler Thayer led the Mariners with a team-high 17 points, while adding four rebounds, two assists and two steals for MMA (1-11). Nick Holt finished the night with 11 points, three rebounds, and two assists while Zachary Radcliffe added 10 points.
RIC 72, USM 57
At Gorham, freshman Roosevelt Shider scored a game-high 23 points to lead the Rhode Island College Anchormen by the University of Southern Maine Huskies.
The win is the fifth straight for the Anchormen who improve to 11-3 overall and 3-1 in the Little East. Southern Maine dips to 3-11 overall and remains winless in the conference at 0-4.
Shider was 8-for-14 overall from the field and 6-for-10 from the three-point line to lead RIC. Senior Chris Burton added 15 points for the Anchormen who shot a solid 48.1 percent (26-for-54) from the field in the win.
Southern Maine junior Jacob Littlefield paced the Huskies’ offensively with 21 points on 9-for-16 shooting. Sophomore Zach Leal added 11 points and three assists.
