BANGOR, Maine — Emera Maine will host a public meeting Thursday night regarding the company’s proposal to build a substation at Saxl Park.

The meeting will be held at Eastern Maine Community College at 7 p.m.

Efforts for the substation began in 2011, when Eastern Maine Medical Center and Emera Maine, then known as Bangor Hydro, launched talks about EMMC’s hospital expansion and the future need for power. The demand for power on Bangor’s East Side will increase when EMMC opens its $247 million, seven-story expansion.

The site would be located behind Cascade Park.

Emera Maine’s 60-year-old substation near Bangor Waterworks would not be able to handle the added demand when EMMC’s expansion opens, company officials have said. The current substation features a capacity of 4.2 megavolt amperes, while the proposed substation would be rated for 28 megavolt amperes.
