HERMON, Maine — Officials will not be able to determine a cause for a fire that heavily damaged a home on Route 2 on Thursday, Hermon Fire Chief Ray Pipes said.

Pipes said an electrical inspector from the state fire marshal’s office has ruled out an electrical problem as the cause.

It has not yet been determined whether the home will be considered a total loss, Pipes said.

The home suffered heavy fire and smoke damage to the second floor, with heavy water damage on the first floor.

The fire broke out late Thursday morning and brought out crews from seven towns to the home near the center of town.

Red Cross spokesman John Lamb said the family of four has been put up in a hotel. The organization is providing them with food and clothing, and the town of Hermon is working to assure they have proper assistance.
