BANGOR, Maine — A Bangor motorist was injured Thursday when the SUV he was driving was struck from behind by a pickup and then pushed into the back end of another pickup near the four-way intersection of Odlin Road and Outer Hammond Street, a Maine State Police trooper said.

Mark Wirta, 46, of Bangor was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center for treatment, Trooper Brenda Coolen said. Wirta’s injuries were not considered life-threatening, according to Coolen.

“But this gentleman had just recently been in a really bad crash five months ago. He was just getting back to work from that,” Coolen said.

Coolen said that the accident happened shortly about 1:40 p.m. when a white Chevrolet 1500 pickup driven by Robert Martin, 73, of Carmel struck Wirta’s white Ford Escape, which was stopped at a red light at the end of western lanes of Interstate 395.

Wirta’s truck then rear-ended a white Dodge 1500 pickup driven by Brad Kenyon, 54, of Newburgh, Coolen said.

After the crash, Martin was arrested by Trooper Brian Bean and taken to Penobscot County Jail, she said.

“This gentleman came along and didn’t stop, failed to yield right of way and slammed into the back [of the other vehicles] and was later arrested for OUI,” she said.

Coolen said Martin might had been ice fishing before the crash as he had the necessary gear in his truck.
