CARIBOU, Maine — People across Maine spent Wednesday digging out after a major winter storm featuring blizzard conditions dumped more than 2 feet of snow on much of the state over the previous 36 hours.

Winter-weary Mainers won’t get much of a reprieve, according to the National Weather Service, which forecast another snowstorm Thursday night through Saturday morning. The weather service placed all of Maine under a winter storm watch over that span. Up to 12 inches of accumulation is possible, and areas of blowing and drifting snow also are likely into Saturday morning, potentially making travel hazardous.

The big storm Tuesday into Wednesday saw Sanford and North Waterboro receive the highest snowfall totals at 31.5 inches, according to the weather service, while Windham checked in at 26 and Lewiston at 25. Portland got 25.5 inches.

Bangor received 17.3 inches. Eastport led Washington County with 24.2 inches. Bar Harbor got the most in Hancock County with 18 inches. Greenville topped Piscataquis County with 17 inches. Cushing’s 16 inches topped Knox County. Solon led Somerset County with 20 inches.

Maine’s two major airports resumed service Wednesday. Bangor International Airport and Portland International Jetport canceled all flights the day before.

The Downeaster also resumed service Wednesday but on a limited schedule, with only Trains 684 (southbound) and 685 (northbound) operating.

Passengers are still urged to check with travel agents, airlines or other transportation services before traveling.

Looking further ahead, the weather service said another storm is possible Monday into Tuesday.
