ROCKLAND, Maine — A 41-year-old man who has spent most of his life behind bars will be serving an additional 42 months after admitting he again failed to meet requirements of the sex offender registry.

Robert O. Rector admitted Wednesday in Knox County Superior Court that he failed to contact his probation officer after he was released from jail in July. This was the third time that Rector had failed to inform probation officials about his whereabouts upon release from jail.

Justice Daniel Billings agreed to revoke the remaining three years and six months of a previously suspended jail term that Rector was sentenced to for a 2003 gross sexual assault conviction.

Defense attorney Roger Hurley said his client has been in and out of jail or prison since he was 11 years old.

“He is not able to function in society,” Hurley said.

He said Rector needed a mentor or someone to work with him upon his release so he can meet the conditions imposed on someone on the registry.

Justice Billings said that, while the system may not be perfect, the Maine Department of Corrections already offers transitional services to people getting out of prison.
