BANGOR — The Downtown Bangor Partnership will host a forum for residents, business owners, property owners and anyone with general interest in the downtown to discuss topics relevant to its continued growth at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11, at Bagel Central, 33 Central St.

Topics will include upcoming events in downtown; beautification efforts planned for summer, including the popular Adopt A Garden program; overview of the GoBangor mobile application; discussion of the 2015 Fresh Air Market and Cool Sounds summer concert series; general information about the City’s timeline for Pickering Square redesign, including plans for public participation and feedback; introduction of new businesses in downtown; parking, and more.

Woodworking classes

BANGOR — Eastern Maine Development Corp. and Eastern Maine Community College are teaming up to offer free training for careers in fine woodworking. Classes will begin Monday, Feb. 16, and will continue through June. Those who complete the course will earn 14 college credits.

While the program and classes are free, students must qualify for and be enrolled in EMDC’s Workforce Investment Act program to receive paid tuition.

The program is linked to businesses in the tri-county area looking for fine woodworkers, specifically in the boat building industry. The practical, hands-on, course of study is intended to be coupled with on-the-job training at these businesses, but the skills gained could be applicable in many of the area woodworking businesses such as cabinet shops, furniture makers and other area businesses in need of workers with specific skills.

Prerequisites for this program include high school level in math and reading as well as a demonstrated interest in pursuing fine woodworking as a skill in employment.

Interested individuals must attend an EMDC application session before to the start of classes.

Application sessions are held in Bangor, Ellsworth and Dover-Foxcroft. Times and dates are available under the Events tab at emdc.org.

Benefit concert

BREWER — The Robin Greenlaw Cancer Benefit Concert and Silent Auction featuring the Allison Ames Band will be held 3-7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, at the Brewer Eagles Club, 22 Atlantic Ave.

Proceeds from the event will help offset medical and travel costs for Robin Greenlaw as she gears up for her next battle against cancer.

Auction items include:

  • A three-night stay at the Five Star Five Diamond Aria Las Vegas Sky Suites, complete with two tickets to Zarkana (Cirque du Soleil) and a $250 F&B credit.
  • Several weekend getaway packages at destinations in Maine and New York City.

BREWER — Celebrate Take Your Child to the Library Day Saturday, Feb. 7, at the Brewer Public Library.

Historical society program

CASTINE — The Castine Historical Society will present a special winter program focused on the relevance of history in our lives at 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6, in the Mitchell Room on the lower level of the society’s Abbott School building on the Castine town common. The event is open to the public with free admission, and will take place in the Mitchell Room on the lower level of the Society’s Abbott School building on the Castine town common.

The program will feature a book talk by author Tim Grove, curator for museum learning at the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. Grove will speak about his book, “A Grizzly in the Mail and Other Adventures in American History.”

Also on program will be an update on progress at the new Museum of the American Revolution, currently under construction in Philadelphia, That talk will be given by the museum’s Director of Collections and Interpretation R. Scott Stephenson.

Grove and Stephenson will be in Castine in early February to work with the Castine Historical Society on interactive updates planned for the society’s permanent exhibit on the Penobscot Expedition of 1779.

Red Sauce Sunday

OLD TOWN — Crossroads Ministries is in need of red pasta sauce and other items that can go on or with pasta. the Old Town United Methodist Church outreach committee is collecting red sauce donations at 726 Stillwater Ave. through Sunday, Feb. 8.

Crossroads has plenty of pasta but needs tomato sauce, spaghetti sauce, stewed tomatoes, tomato paste and any other “red” tomato-based canned item that can go on pasta.

Boy Scout Troop 76 and Pack 76 will contribute items and ask for donations, too.

If Old Town area residents need someone to transport items to the church, call Chris Kelley, Scout Master of Troop 76, at 478-4295 to make arrangements.

Those who wish to donate are invited to bring items to the church at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 8, which is also Boy Scout Sunday.

Craft fair

ORONO — The University of Maine Partners for World Health club will hosting a craft fair 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Feb. 28, at the Orono American Legion hall.

Partners for World Health is a nonprofit organization. Proceeds from table fee will go toward shipping a 40- foot sea container filled with medical supplies to a developing nation.

Library services talk

ORONO — Joyce Wiebe will talk about library services 1-2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 12, at Orono Public Library, 39 Pine St.. Her topics will cover how to request books and movies from home, download audiobooks and ebooks for free to whatever device you use, stream movies and access magazine articles, computer skill tutorials and more.

Youth science day

ORONO — Designing a container to assist a University of Maine Climate Change Institute professor with research is the focus of a UMaine 4-H Science Saturday workshop 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 14, at Edward T. Bryand Global Sciences Center on campus.

Youth in grades six through eight will build a canister to keep ice core samples gleaned from the Peruvian Andes frozen and intact for research. Participants also will tour Sawyer Environmental Research Center. And, after lunch, youth will have the option to swim at the pool in the New Balance Student Recreation Center.

The $15 fee includes the science program and lunch; the optional swim is $3. Registration materials are available at umaine.edu/4h/home/science-saturday. Maximum enrollment is 20; Feb. 6 is the registration deadline.

Festival table rental

ORONO — HOPE Festival organizers announced recently that applications table rental space is now available.

At the festival, more than 60 organizations will showcase their work for a better world, share information, offer demonstrations, sell buttons, T-shirts, and other products, and encourage new people to get involved.

This year’s HOPE Festival theme is Simple Solutions to Big Problems.

Table applications must be returned by March 30. Register as early as possible to ensure the best location, reservations for limited backdrops and electrical connections, and promotion in outreach materials. Ice fishing derby

STETSON — The 17th annual Howard Lodge AF & AM Ice Fishing Derby will be held Saturday, Feb. 14, at Pleasant Lake in Stetson. The weigh-in and length station will be at Herb’s Landing at White’s Camp. Fish must be registered by 3 p.m. Cash prizes will be awarded for the three heaviest bass and the three longest pickerel. A Grand Prize drawing for $500 worth of home heating oil will be conducted — no need to be present to win.

Feb. 14 is a free fishing day in Maine, no license is required, derby organizers said.

Derby entry fee is $5.  Proceeds will benefit Howard Lodge Square and Compass Club. For information, call 296-2929.

Boston Flower Show

VEAZIE — The Veazie Senior citizens are organizing a bus trip to the Boston Flower Show on Wednesday, March 11. Veazie Seniors will have first consideration for reservations. If seniors from Veazie cannot fill the bus, other seniors in surrounding areas will be added to the list on a first come, first served basis.

The trip cost is $40 and includes Boston Flower Show ticket and bus tickets. Meals will be at your own expense. The bus will leave the Veazie Community Center parking lot at 6 a.m. and return to Veazie at 10 p.m. The bus will leave Boston at approximately 4:30 p.m. and stop in South Portland for dinner.

Building Grant Program

AREA — Nonprofit and public organizations seeking funding for projects that draw on the strengths of the community and foster collaboration are encouraged to apply to the Maine Community Foundation’s Community Building Grant Program.
