PORTLAND, Maine — A Pennsylvania man was sentenced Tuesday to five years of probation on a counterfeiting charge, according to the U.S. attorney’s office.

Michael Kurnik, 26, also will have to pay $25,000 in restitution.

According to court documents, Kurnik regularly purchased what were believed to be OtterBox cellphone cases from suppliers in China and resold them to people throughout the United States.

The buyers often sold the cases on eBay and other online sites, and one seller contacted Kurnik in May 2013 and informed him that OtterBox told him he was going to be sued for selling counterfeit cases on eBay.

Despite the lawsuit, Kurnik continued to sell the phony cellphone cases, sending a shipment to a Maine reseller in December 2013.

A search warrant in Pennsylvania turned up about 6,700 OtterBox cases, and Kurnik was arrested July 15 in Pennsylvania after being indicted by the federal grand jury in Portland a week earlier.
