Magic fire coach Vaughn

The Orlando Magic fired coach Jacque Vaughn on Thursday, ending a week of speculation about his job security. James Borrego was named interim coach.

The Magic (15-37) are in the midst of a 10-game losing streak and have the fifth-worst record in the NBA. They are 13th in the Eastern Conference, 7 1/2 games out of the eighth and final playoff spot.

Vaughn, 39, leaves the Magic with a 58-158 record in three seasons, and his 27.2 winning percentage is the lowest in franchise history.

Vaughn is a former San Antonio Spurs assistant coach under Gregg Popovich. He replaced Stan Van Gundy before the start of the 2012-13 season, and was the second-youngest head coach in the NBA at the time of his hiring.

Seahawks’ Sherman ‘ecstatic’ over son’s birth

Seattle Seahawks All-Pro cornerback Richard Sherman’s girlfriend, Ashley Moss, gave birth to the couple’s first child Thursday morning.

The couple’s son arrived four days after the Seahawks’ disappointing loss in Super Bowl XLIX; Sherman’s status for the game had Moss gone into labor early had been a question leading up to the game.

Sherman joked on the Thursday before the game that he expected his son “to be a disciplined young man and stay in there a while longer.”

On Thursday, Sherman tweeted that he was “ecstatic” over the birth of his son, whose name is Rayden, according to Peter King of MMQB.com.

Red Sox, Miley agree on three-year, $19.25M extension

The Boston Red Sox and new left-hander Wade Miley agreed Thursday to a three-year contract extension worth $19.25 million.

The Red Sox basically bought out the 28-year-old’s arbitration years and also included a $12 million club option for 2018.

Miley will make $3.5 million this year, $6 million in 2016 and $8.75 million in 2017.

The Red Sox acquired Miley from the Arizona Diamondbacks in December for pitchers Rubby De La Rosa and Allen Webster.

Miley was 8-12 with a 4.34 ERA in 33 starts for Arizona last season. In 2012, he went 16-11 with a 3.33 ERA and was second in voting for NL rookie of the year behind Washington Nationals slugger Bryce Harper.

Titans release Oher

The Tennessee Titans cut offensive tackle Michael Oher on Thursday, according to the Tennessean.

Oher, otherwise famous as the inspiration for the book (and movie) “The Blind Side,” signed a four-year, $20 million contract with the Titans last offseason and struggled before being placed on injured reserve in December with a toe injury.

He had joined the Titans after leaving the Baltimore Ravens, where he had given up 22.5 sacks the previous two seasons. Before going on IR last season, he gave up six sacks in 11 games.

Oher, 28, will count $3 million against the salary cap in 2015, but the Titans will save $2 million by releasing him.
