Only signed photo of ‘Shoeless’ Joe Jackson up for auction
CLEVELAND — A signed photograph from 1911 of legendary baseball player “Shoeless” Joe Jackson, thought to be the only one in existence, will go on the auction block later this month after more than a century in a Cleveland news photographer’s scrapbook.
The photograph of Jackson, a star outfielder who was banned from baseball after being accused of helping to throw the 1919 World Series, is expected to fetch a minimum of $100,000, Chris Ivy, director of sports auctions for Dallas-based Heritage Auctions, said on Monday.
“The fact that it is an 8 by 10 (inches) oversized photograph, taken in 1911, his record rookie season, with the signature in mint condition, is as good as it gets for a collector,” Ivy said.
Fewer than 100 Jackson autographs exist in the marketplace in part because he had little formal education and was “functionally illiterate,” Ivy said.
A live auction for Jackson’s photo, along with other members of the 1911 Cleveland Naps team, will take place in New York City on Feb. 21.
Seahawks hire Carroll’s son as assistant coach
The Seattle Seahawks added two assistant coaches from the University of Miami on Monday.
Brennan Carroll is leaving Miami to join father Pete’s staff in Seattle as an assistant offensive line coach, and Miami linebackers coach Micheal Barrow will replace Ken Norton Jr. in that role in Seattle.
With the move, Brennan Carroll is reunited with his brother, Nate, who is an offensive assistant with the Seahawks.
Brennan Carroll coached under his father at USC from 2002 to 2009 and was hired in 2011 by Miami, where he has coached tight ends and wide receivers and coordinated recruiting.
Padres sign pitcher Shields
The San Diego Padres reached an agreement with right-handed starting pitcher James Shields on a four-year contract, according to reports Monday.
SB Nation reported Shields’ deal, pending a physical, is worth between $72 million and $78 million. The deal includes a club option for a fifth year, a source told ESPN.com.
Shields, 33, had a 14-8 record with a 3.21 ERA, 180 strikeouts and just 44 walks in 227 innings for the Kansas City Royals last season.
Shields, who grew up near San Diego, made $13.5 million in 2014. He has a career 114-90 record and 3.72 ERA over nine seasons with the Tampa Bay Rays and the Royals.
Bills convinced Incognito ready to ‘move forward’
The Buffalo Bills officially signed disgraced former Miami Dolphins guard Richie Incognito on Monday, convinced his past troubles are behind him.
Incognito, 31, has not played since he was suspended by the Dolphins in 2013 as a result of a high-profile bullying scandal that involved former teammate Jonathan Martin.
“We are convinced that Richie is prepared to move forward and has and will continue to take the necessary steps to improve himself as a person and a teammate,” Bills owner Terry Pegula said in a statement.
Incognito is best known for being at the center of an NFL-ordered probe that detailed a bullying scandal in the Dolphins’ clubhouse.
The scandal broke after Martin voluntarily left the club and said afterwards that he had been subjected to harassment, which an investigator said included racial slurs and sexual taunts about his mother and sister.
Incognito was subsequently suspended for the last eight games of the 2013 season stemming from Martin’s complaint.
