EDMONTON, Alberta — Defenseman Martin Marincin scored the only goal of the shootout, in the 12th round, to give the Edmonton Oilers a 4-3 win over the Boston Bruins on Wednesday night at Rexall Place.
The Oilers hadn’t beaten the Bruins at home since Oct. 17, 2000. For the slumping Bruins, it was their fifth loss in a row.
Edmonton jumped out to a 2-0 first-period lead on goals from right winger Nail Yakupov at 4:29 and center Ryan Nugent-Hopkins at 15:53 as both players continued their hot streaks.
Yakupov made it 1-0 when he one-timed a feed from center Derek Roy at 4:29 for his third goal in two games and extended his point streak to six games (four goals and three assists). Yakupov is currently playing his most productive hockey since the tail end of his rookie season.
The Nugent-Hopkins goal was his fourth goal in four games and Edmonton’s sixth power-play goal in its last 16 chances.
Boston closed it to 2-1 with a late power-play goal from right winger Loui Eriksson, a deflected point shot that Oilers goalie Ben Scrivens, who was excellent in the first period, never saw.
Edmonton’s power play made it 3-1 (and 7-for-17) early in the second period when right winger Ted Purcell scored for the first time in 12 games.
The Oilers looked like they had the game in control at that point, but the Bruins had different ideas and shut the building up in a hurry with two quick goals to tie it.
Right wingers Reilly Smith and David Pastrnak scored at 14:17 and 15:52, respectively, to make it 3-3 through 40 minutes, which is how the score stayed through regulation and overtime.
The Oilers are 4-19-5 in their first game back from a trip of three games or longer since the beginning of the 2010-11 season.
Oilers defenseman Jeff Petry left the game with a rib injury after being hit into boards midway through the second period. Petry is Edmonton’s biggest trading chip heading into the March 2 deadline and his game and his value had been trending up in recent weeks.
Edmonton center Anton Lander, who has been playing the best hockey of his young career — three goals in his last five games — left the game in the third period with a shoulder injury.
The Oilers aren’t disclosing the severity of either injury.
