HOULTON, Maine — A 33-year-old Mars Hill man who on Wednesday was refused release by a bail commissioner because of the nature of domestic violence charges he faces pleaded not guilty to the crimes Friday afternoon.
Bail also was set for Karter Bell at $2,000 cash or $12,000 surety after he entered his plea to charges of domestic violence assault, terrorizing, criminal threatening and criminal mischief.
Bell appeared by videoconference from the Aroostook County Jail in Houlton before Judge David Soucy, who was sitting in Fort Kent District Court.
Aroostook County Assistant District Attorney James Mitchill represented the state, he said Friday evening.
Bell was arrested by deputies from the Aroostook County Sheriff’s Office after an incident involving a woman on Tuesday in Mars Hill, according to Sheriff Darrell Crandall.
Deputies began the criminal investigation and tried to find Bell late that day, but were unsuccessful, Crandall said. Bell — who found out he was sought by law enforcement — was located on Wednesday afternoon at an East Ridge Road residence, where he allegedly was hiding in the bathroom.
After Bell was taken to jail on Wednesday, a bail commissioner refused to set bail because of the nature of the incident, according to Crandall.
Mitchill said Friday that information about the victim and details about the incident are not being released at this time.
Bell remained incarcerated as of Friday evening.
