BANGOR — Literacy Volunteers of Bangor announced recently that its semi-annual Tutor Training Certification gives community volunteers the skills to help a neighbor improve his or her life with increased literacy. A few hours a week along with patience, flexibility and a passion to make a difference are all that is required of volunteers.
Tutor Deb Glazier of Bangor has tutored Nicole Hustus, a young mother of three, so that she can get take the high school equivalency test.
“When I retired from teaching, I wanted to use my skill set differently. Today as a tutor, I use my skills to help Nicole achieve her personal and educational goals. I receive tremendous personal satisfaction knowing our work together is having a positive effect on her lovely family. I proudly observe her progress and know that she is on her way,” Glazier said.
The Spring Tutor Training begins 6-9 p.m. Thursday, March 12, and continues through four Thursdays in March and April at United Technologies Center on the Hogan Road in Bangor.
