Heavy snowfall Wednesday morning created hazardous driving conditions that contributed to a 75-vehicle pileup on Interstate 95 in Carmel, but the sun made an appearance in the afternoon while vehicles were being towed away.
Wednesday’s storm hit Down East the hardest, burying the area with another foot of snow, according to Pete Rahe of the National Weather Service in Caribou. The highest snowfall total went to Whiting, which picked up another 13 inches.
Bar Harbor got 11 inches of snow, Knox and Waldo counties reported about 8 to 9 inches of snow, and Greater Bangor got about 6 inches of snow.
Snowfall totals dropped off just south of Brunswick, according to Andy Pohl of the National Weather Service in Gray. Bath gained 5.8 inches of snow, but nearby Bowdoinham reported just 3 inches of snow. Kennebec County reported about 4 inches of snow, and Greater Portland added about 2 inches or less.
Northern Maine reported little snow, largely because the storm tracked farther south, Rahe said.
“A 50-mile shift in the track makes a big difference,” he said.
Houlton gained about 2½ inches.
Frigid temperatures are slated to return after a one-day reprieve Wednesday. Temperatures are forecast to be in the teens through the end of the week, with a slight increase to the mid-30s late Sunday, according to Pohl.
The next system is well over a week away, according to Rahe, who anticipates fairly decent but cold weather ahead.
