PORTLAND, Maine — A large quantity of snow has caused a gas line to break in the area of Congress and North streets, according to Portland Fire Department spokesman Tim Nangle.
The broken gas line at 141 Congress Street was reported about 12:30 p.m. Friday, according to Nangle.
Officials detected a high level of natural gas in the building, and subsequently evacuated it and neighboring buildings, he added.
Nangle said that heavy snow had accumulated on an exterior gas meter, causing the gas line to break.
“We are asking anyone who uses either natural gas or propane to ensure that the gas meter and surrounding piping is clear of snow and ice,” Nangle said. “This equipment is not designed to withstand the weight of snow or falling ice.”
No injuries were reported and as soon as the air quality is safe, residents and occupants of the buildings will be allowed to return.
