Art in the Heart exhibit

BANGOR — Art in the Heart of Maine will present “Our Students’ Art Exhibit” through Saturday, March 21, at the Bangor Mall. The show features student artwork from 49 participating teachers in the Bangor area.

The artwork was selected by teachers to demonstrate the variety and skill of their students.

Art in the Heart of Maine is a professional organization made up of teachers who meet monthly to exchange ideas and organize exhibitions.

The Bangor Mall donates the space and the art show is free and open to the public. This is a tradition which has been going on for more than 35 years.

The University of Maine Museum of Art will jury the show and select 16-20 pieces for

another exhibition at the museum which will open April 13 and run through April 30

with a closing reception for family and friends 5-6 p.m. Thursday, April 30.

Admission to the University of Maine Museum of Art is free in 2015 thanks to the generosity of Penobscot Financial Advisors.

Call for older artists

BELFAST — Senior College at Belfast invites all Maine artists age 50 and older, amateur and professional, to participate in the 2015 Festival of Art to be held Thursday through Sunday, May 21-24, at the University of Maine Hutchinson Center in Belfast.

The registration period for artists is through March 31.

Artwork must be delivered to the center on Wednesday, May 20.

All types of visual art are sought, including painting, sculpture, woodcarving, jewelry, fabric art, pottery and photography. Artists will have an opportunity to sell their work if they wish.

For the past 12 years, the exhibit has included work from new artists, well-known accomplished artists, artists who are striving to build their reputations, and those who only wish to share their work with an appreciative audience. At times, there have been as many as 170 artists participating in the event, and several hundred visitors attending the exhibit.

Pops concert and dinner

BREWER — The Brewer Music Department and Brewer Music Association will present the 16th annual pops concert and spaghetti dinner Wednesday, April 1, at the Brewer Community School and Brewer Performing Arts Center. Dinner will be from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. with the concert beginning at 7 p.m. featuring the Brewer Community School band under the direction of Lanissa Nadeau, and the Brewer High School concert band under the direction of Brady Harris.

Tickets for the dinner and concert are $10, $7 senior citizens, students and children. Tickets for the concert only are $5, $3 senior citizens, students and children. Purchase three or more tickets online and receive a 10 percent discount. Proceeds will benefit the music program and music scholarships. Tickets may be purchased at brewerperformingarts.com, by calling 200-5447 or at the door at the Brewer Performing Arts Center.

Riot Sound!

ORONO — Orono Middle School’s new show choir, Riot Sound! performed at the District Festival recently and earned 95 and 96 out of 100 points. The group is headed to state-level competition, which will take place at Stearns High School on March 27.

Teachers Cami Carter and Terry Henry created the opportunity for Orono Middle School students.

Orono Arts Cafe

ORONO — The Orono Arts Cafe will celebrate the luck of the Irish and much more Friday, March 13, at the Keith Anderson Community House, Bennoch Road. Open-mic sign-up begins at 6:30 p.m., the show starts at 7 p.m. Admission is $3; performers get a free root beer float or other treat.  Earnings from admission and refreshment sales support arts programs and scholarships.

ORRINGTON — March is Music in Our Schools month and The Gifts of Music, a nonprofit organization, is offering a Grant and Gifts package to one lucky music teacher in Maine.

School music educators are encouraged to submit a grant application available at thegiftsofmusic.org.

“The Gifts of Music was founded five years ago in order to support music education

opportunities for Maine youth,” said founder Susan Patten. “A robust music education is

so important and The Gifts of Music wants to recognize the amazing effort and commitment of Maine music educators throughout the state by offering this grant opportunity.”

Grant application deadline is Saturday, March 21. The The Gifts of Music board will convene

Monday March 23 to determine a winner.

The Gifts of Music Grant and Gifts package will include a $350cash grant to the winning school music educator’s program; a professionally refurbished instrument for the school band or string program; a $200 gift card from Mark’s Music in Brewer; a $200 photo session with Bell Imaging and Design, LLC; and gift certificate from Bangor Symphony Orchestra for concert tickets.
