WAITE, Maine — A blaze that leveled a log cabin in Washington County over the weekend has been deemed accidental, according to the State Fire Marshal’s Office.

Sgt. Tim York said in an email Monday that the fire was caused by a vacuum cleaner that likely malfunctioned.

The fire, which was reported Sunday morning, originated in the garage.

The blaze prompted a response from six Washington County towns, and while no injuries were reported, the cabin was a total loss.

Waite has a population 101, according to the most recent census. It is about 20 miles south of Spednik Lake at the U.S.-Canadian border and 30 miles northwest of St. Stephen, New Brunswick.
