TAMPA, Florida — Senior right-hander Alexis Bogdanovich allowed only two hits to lead the Maine Black Bears to an 8-0 softball victory over the Yale Bulldogs Tuesday.
Bogdanovich struck out seven and walked two while improving to 5-2.
Maine spoiled Yale’s season-opener, but he Black Bears dropped an 8-2 decision to South Florida in their second game of the day.
The Bears used a six-run third inning to put the Bulldogs away early. Erika Leonard drove in the first run on an infield single and the second run came across on Jessica Burk’s fielder’s choice grounder. EmJ Fogel’s single to center accounted for the third run and Rachel Harvey drove in the fourth on a sacrifice fly. Maine’s final two runs were unearned.
Fogel finished with three hits and three RBIs for the Black Bears while Sarah Coyne chipped in with two hits.
Sarah Onorato doubled for Yale and Camille Weisenbach singled.
South Florida (19-7) scored five runs in the first inning en route to the win over the Bears with Lee Ann Spivey slamming a three-run homer. Sophomore left-hander Erin Bogdanovich lasted only a third of an inning and slipped to 1-4.
Felicia Lennon singled twice, notched a sacrifice fly and drove in two runs for Maine, which was held to five hits.
Baseball
Husson loses two
At Lakeland, Florida, Husson dropped two games to Rhode Island College, 8-2 and 3-2 in 11 innings.
Husson is now 1-4 and RIC isw 5-3.
In the first contest, Husson and RIC were tied 2-2 going into the bottom of the fifth, but RIC erupted for six runs in the bottom of the fifth to take control.
Christian Corneil went 2 for 3 with a RBI while Kyle Bishop also went 2 for 3 for the Eagles.
Ben Holmes took the loss after pitching 4 ⅓ innings and giving up six earned runs.
In the second game, a Corneil double in the second inning scored Bishop and Dan Whitney followed that up with a groundout that scored Julien Boone and the Eagles held a 2-0 lead after two.
RIC added a run in the third and fifth to send the game to extra innings. RIC took the lead in the top of the 11th.
Brandon Gendreau, JT Whitten and Bishop each had two hits to lead the Husson attack.
Corey Mongiat pitched eight innings and gave up only two earned runs while Brandon Grabkowski pitched three innings and gave up a run to take the loss.
The Eagles return to action Wednesday against New Jersey City.
Maine 12, LIU 2
At Winter Haven, Florida, sophomore Jeff Gelinas pitched seven scoreless inning to propel the Black Bears by Long Island University-Brooklyn.
Gelinas (2-1) allowed only one hit, walked one and struck out seven to help Maine improve to 5-12.
The Bears scored three runs each in the first, second and third innings. First baseman Brendan Geary sparked the offense with four hits and an RBI. Brett Chappell chipped in with a double, single and three RBIs while Luke Morrill singled twice and drove in a run.
LIU is now 3-4.
Maine plays Bucknell at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday.
USM opens Wednesday
Coming off trips to the NCAA Division III College World Series the past two seasons, the University of Southern Maine baseball begins its quest for a third straight trip to Appleton, Wisconsin, on Wednesday when the Huskies play Suffolk University in a doubleheader at Chain O’ Lakes Field in Winter Haven, Florida.
Veteran head coach Ed Flaherty, beginning his 30th season as the Huskies’ head coach, returns 16 players from last year’s squad that finished 37-15 overall and fourth at the Division III World Series. The Huskies return the bulk of the pitching staff, but have to replace six field position players in the lineup.
Leading a deep pitching staff this season will be junior starters Tyler Leavitt and Shyler Scates along with senior reliever Andrew Richards. Leavitt, the 2014 Little East Conference Pitcher of the Year, was 8-3 with a 3.14 ERA. Scates compiled a 6-4 mark with a 4.14 ERA. Richards, the workhorse out of the bullpen, pitched a staff high 84.1 innings compiling a 7-1 record with seven saves and a 3.63 ERA.
Junior shortstop Sam Dexter and sophomore infielder Paul McDonough will be the keys to a revamped lineup. Dexter, a two-time All-LEC pick and the 2013 Rookie of the Year, led the team in hitting last spring with a .382 average, 14 doubles, two home runs and 33 RBI. McDonough, the LEC Rookie of the Year in 2014, batted .335 with 11 doubles, three home runs and 31 RBI.
Women’s Lacrosse
St. Joseph’s 21, MMA 1
At Portland on Monday night, St. Joseph’s beat Maine Maritime Academy in the Mariners’ first-ever NCAA women’s lacrosse game.
Elizabeth Elcock, Mary Leasure, and Elyse Caiazzo each scored three goals to lead St. Joe’s.
Rachael Redles scored MMA’s first goal and Ashlee Knight finished with seven saves.
Colby 16, UNE 4
At Waterville on Tuesday, goalie Sam Burch earned her first collegiate win and attacker Kendall Smith had four goals in Colby’s win over the University of New England.
Kelsey Bowen had her first collegiate points with two goals and two assists, while Sasha Fritts added a pair of goals and one assist for Colby (3-1). Dana Swaffield added two goals and one assist.
Hannah Warren led UNE (1-3) with a pair goals. Gina Newsome and Olivia Madore also scored.
