EAST BOOTHBAY, Maine — A man was taken by ambulance to a hospital for a medical issue not considered life-threatening after an unusual single-vehicle accident in East Boothbay on Tuesday.

Norman H. Lind, 80, was driving a 2008 Subaru Outback station wagon south on Ocean Point Road, or Route 96, near the East Boothbay General Store when he experienced the medical issue, according to Lincoln County Sheriff’s Deputy Scott Mercier.

According to descriptions by Mercier and others, the car crossed the centerline, the southbound lane and a sidewalk; climbed a snowbank, went airborne over a driveway and landed in a front yard, where deep snow slowed the vehicle down.

The vehicle came to rest against the side door of a house at 254 Ocean Point Road, across from the general store.

Lind was not injured in the accident, Mercier said. Boothbay Region Ambulance Service brought him to Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick for evaluation. There were no passengers in the vehicle.

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office has not released the man’s name.

The station wagon “vaulted” over the driveway, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office Maj. Ken Mason said. “There are no tire tracks till the lawn. … The snow slowed him down, and all he did was knock at the side door.”

“It’s a lucky day,” Mason said.

Mason was not sure how fast the man was driving at the time of the accident. “He wasn’t going too crazy, because if he was going really fast, he’d be into the house,” he said.

Lind was wearing a seat belt and the Subaru’s airbags did not deploy, Mason said.

The car did not appear to have significant damage, though there was some damage to the house, Mercier said.

The Boothbay Fire Department, the Boothbay Harbor Police Department and the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene.
