BANGOR, Maine — Two officials with the United States Geological Survey took to the frozen Penobscot River on Wednesday to collect data for the Coast Guard.
Greg Stewart, data section chief of the New England Water Science Center in Augusta, said the Coast Guard plans to have the boat Thunder Bay come to the area next week to break ice on the river.
Stewart said the two-man crew took to the river to make roughly 30 to 35 holes
Winter storms and cold weather have hampered the Coast Guard’s efforts to cut ice along the river. Coast Guard boats typically can break through about 18 inches of ice, but the ice measured 22 inches thick Wednesday.
