Arts, Sciences Celebration
BANGOR — The Masonic Grand Lodge will host its annual Arts and Sciences Celebration 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, April 11, at the Bangor Masonic Center, 294 Union St.
Guest speaker at the event will be Dr. Jeffrey Hecker, executive vice president for academic affairs and provost, University of Maine. His topic will be “The Arts and Sciences: Essential and Besieged.”
The event is free and open to all. The cost for the dinner is $5. To register, call the Masonic Grand Lodge office at 843-1086.
The event schedule is:
- Opening: 9-9:15 a.m., Gen. Steve Nichols, chairman, board of regents, Dr. Eric Kuntz,
dean of Maine Masonic College and David Walker, Masonic grand master.
- 9:15-10:15 a.m., professor Jeffrey Hecker, executive vice president and provost, University of
- 10:15-10:45 a.m., break.
- 10:45-11:30 a.m., professor Liam Riordan, director of the Humanities Institute, University of Maine.
- 11:30-12:30 a.m., panel discussion with professor Francois Amar, dean of the University of Maine Honors College, and honor students. Topic: “Philosophy Across the Ages.”
- 12:30-12:45 p.m., question and answer session.
- 1 p.m., dinner.
International award
GLENBURN — Illustrator and author Josh Alves of Glenburn was selected recently as the winner of the international TigerCreate interactive book competition. A panel of publishing professionals selected his entry as the winner of all three categories — innovation, interactivity and kid’s favorite. Along with publication in the Tiger Books app, Alves will be flown to Italy to receive the award at a ceremony during the Bologna Children’s Book Fair.

Nature poetry reading
HOLDEN — A nature poetry reading led by Christina Diebold in celebration of National Poetry Month, will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 7, at Fields Pond Audubon Center. Share a favorite nature or environmental poem. It can be a poem that is obscure, well-known or one you wrote. Or just listen to the beauty of poetry about nature. Admission is free.
Dance workshop
ORONO – Ray Marc Dumont, director and choreographer, will conduct a musical theater dance workshop 3-4:30 p.m. Friday, April 3, in the Polly Thomas Dance Studio, second floor, Class of 1944 Hall, University of Maine.
This workshop is free and open to the public. Attendees are advised to arrive ready to move. Dumont will teach numbers and combinations from “A Chorus Line” and “Chicago.” He has directed and choreographed musical theater productions in southern and central Maine and has performed professionally at numerous regional theaters across the United States. He also spent many summers at Maine State Music Theatre, serving in numerous capacities over a 10-year period. In 1999, he became managing director of Maine State Music Theatre, a post he held until 2003.
