WINTHROP, Maine — A standoff on Spruce Street in Winthrop came to an end Monday afternoon. Winthrop police say the perpetrator is dead.

The Winthrop police chief declined to elaborate on how the standoff came to an end at this time.

Because of the incident, Winthrop schools were dismissed early after spending the day in “lock out.”

According to the superintendent, classes continued as normal but no one was allowed inside any of the buildings.
