ROCKLAND, Maine — A Holden man already serving a four-year prison sentence on multiple other charges was sentenced Monday in Knox County on additional burglary and theft charges.
The most recent charges against Joseph W. Demmons, 30, stem from the break-in at a Four Rod Road home in Warren last June, when police say he and a 13-year-old girl stole an iPad and about $50 in loose coins.
At the time, Demmons already was wanted by police on 12 warrants out of Penobscot County and was believed to be living in a tent behind Ande’s Variety in Warren.
Police spotted Demmons in Warren the day after the burglary and chased him through the woods but he was able to evade capture. He was apprehended a few days later in Bangor.
The warrants out of Penobscot County against Demmons were for failure to pay fines on convictions for operating under the influence, operating after suspension, refusing to submit to arrest, violation of conditions of release and criminal threatening.
On Monday, Justice Daniel Billings sentenced Demmons to three years in prison on the Warren burglary and theft charges. However, that sentence will be served concurrent to the four-year sentence Demmons already was ordered to serve out of Penobscot County on the previous charges, said Assistant Knox County District Attorney Jeffrey Baroody. That will mean not additional time for Demmons unless he violates probation conditions after his release.
The teen who accompanied Demmons on the burglary advertised the iPad on her Facebook page and a Warren man purchased it for $100 and then traded it for synthetic marijuana at a local pawn shop. When the man learned that the device had been stolen he telephoned the owner and offered to tell her where it was for $70. The owner contacted police and the Knox County Sheriff’s Office apprehended the man when he met with the owner at Payson Park in Warren.
It was unclear Wednesday what, if any charges, were filed against the teenager or the other man.
