ELIOT, Maine — Nomination papers are now available for anyone seeking nomination for the open positions to be elected on June 9.
For selectmen and overseer of the poor there are two open seats, each with a three-year term. The Board of Selectmen, consisting of five members, is the legislative and policy-making body of municipal government.
The terms of incumbents Stephen Beckert, the current chairman, and Grant Hirst are expiring. Town Clerk Wendy Rawski said Hirst has picked up nomination papers, but Beckert has not yet done so. It is still early in the process.
Selectmen are elected at-large on a non-partisan basis for overlapping three-year terms of office.
The chairman of the board is elected from among the board membership on an annual basis. Selectmen also serve as the overseers of the poor.
The Budget Committee has three openings for a three-year term and one opening for a one-year term. There is one opening for the School Administrative District 35 board of directors.
Nomination papers are now available at the town clerk’s office. They can be picked up anytime during normal business hours.
Rawski said nomination papers must have at least 25 signatures, but not more than 100.
“There is no fee to file, but they must come into the clerk’s office to receive papers,” she said.
Rawski said candidates must be at least 18 years old and a registered voter in Eliot. The completed papers must be filed with the clerk by the close of business on Monday, April 27.
The annual town meeting election will be held June 9 at Marshwood Middle School from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
