NOBLEBORO, Maine — Police say a Hampden woman had been drinking Saturday night when she ran over her boyfriend, a convicted sex offender, after she found him attempting to assault a young girl.
Lincoln County sheriff’s deputies went to a home on East Neck Road about 11:30 p.m. Saturday after a domestic disturbance was reported and found that James Oliver, 48, of Hampden had been run over by a car in the home’s driveway, according to a news release from Lincoln County Sheriff’s Lt. Michael Murphy.
Deputies determined that Oliver’s girlfriend, Linda Currier, 53, allegedly walked in on Oliver attempting to sexually assault a girl.
Oliver is a lifetime registrant of the Maine Sex Offender Registry after being convicted of rape, sexual abuse of a minor and failure to comply with the sex offender registration act.
A fight ensued after Currier’s discovery and it continued outside, where Currier ran over Oliver, Murphy said.
Currier and Oliver apparently had been drinking, according to Murphy.
The girl did not suffer any injuries requiring immediate medical attention, according to the release, and was taken to her family.
Oliver was taken to Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta and then to Maine Medical Center for treatment of a serious but not life-threatening leg injury.
Oliver was charged with attempted gross sexual assault, unlawful sexual touching and failure to comply with the sex offender registration act — a crime for which he previously has been charged. He was taken to Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset, then the Maine State Prison in Warren, where he awaits a court appearance.
Currier was charged with operating under the influence and aggravated assault. She was released on bail from Two Bridges Regional Jail pending a court appearance. Details about the bail and date of her court appearance were not immediately available.
