HARPSWELL, Maine — A 33-year-old Brunswick woman sought by police who were checking on her welfare was taken to Mid Coast Hospital on Thursday afternoon after police say she drove her car head-on into a large rock outcropping.
Brunswick police alerted area law enforcement agencies just after 3 p.m. Thursday to be on the lookout for the woman’s car after receiving a phone call from friends and family who were concerned for the woman’s welfare after statements she made to them, Cmdr. Marc Hagan said Friday.
A deputy from the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office saw the car headed south on Harpswell Islands Road at 3:49 p.m. Thursday and prepared to initiate a traffic stop, according to a release from Capt. Don Goulet of the sheriff’s office.
Before the car could be pulled over, the driver appeared to veer off the roadway intentionally, “slamming head-on into a large rock outcropping,” according to Goulet.
The woman was taken to Mid Coast Hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.
No criminal charges were filed because the incident is being treated as an intentional act, Goulet said.
