MEXICO, Maine — Police in Oxford County are investigating the theft of a woman’s crutches from the Mexico Walmart, according to the town’s police chief.
The owner was shopping on Wednesday around 4 p.m., and when she returned to the store’s entrance, her crutches were gone, according to Chief Ray Hodsdon.
Hodsdon said the woman, who was born with a birth defect and has to use crutches to get around, was using a motorized cart to shop and had left her crutches near the store entrance.
According to video surveillance, the person who took the crutches appears to be someone in his or her 50s who was wearing an eye patch and an oxygen mask, Hodsdon said.
The case remains open, and Hodsdon said police have received calls from the public willing to purchase new crutches for the woman.
Anyone with information on the case should contact Mexico’s police department at 364-5686 or the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office at 743-4259.
