ROCKLAND, Maine — Local first responders braved softening ice Friday evening to rescue a pair of pooches that had gotten stranded on one of the frozen quarries off Old County Road.

The dogs had been reported missing by their owner earlier that day and later were seen on the quarry, according to the Rockland Police Department’s Facebook page. Rockland Fire Chief Adam Miceli said personnel donned ice rescue suits before heading out to get the dogs. The rescue call came in at about 6:15 p.m.

“The ice conditions were pretty good, except right at the edge,” Miceli said Saturday morning.

One of the dogs apparently had an injured paw, he said, and needed assistance.

Miceli said he didn’t have more information available immediately but added that police and fire personnel have rescued many animals over the years.

“People’s pets are their family,” he said. “We certainly try to help.”

The police department’s Facebook post indicated that all was well that ended well.

“We’re happy to say that both dogs are home safe and sound,” it said.
