DAMARISCOTTA, Maine — Fire destroyed a small house and shed at 65 Cathedral Pines Road in Damariscotta the afternoon of Saturday, April 11.
“There’s not anything left of the house,” Damariscotta Fire Chief John Roberts said. Nobody was at the seasonal home at the time of the fire and there were no injuries, he said.
Richard and Jeanne McInnis own the property, according to town records.
“The fire was through the roof before any of us got here,” Roberts said. “It took us a while to get access because the driveway wasn’t plowed. We started putting water on it within a few minutes.”
Firefighter Jamie Genthner lives nearby and was able to clear the driveway with a backhoe, Roberts said.
Neighbor Mary Palmer called 911 after her daughter, Katy Palmer, told her the house was on fire.
“We ran down the road and it was black smoke, and by the time we got down here and my son got me my phone, it was engulfed in flames,” Mary Palmer said.
The State Fire Marshal’s Office will attempt to determine the cause of the fire. Roberts plans to meet with State Fire Marshal’s Office personnel at the scene on Monday.
“I only know it started in the back corner of the house,” Roberts said.
Lincoln County Communications paged the Damariscotta Fire Department to the scene at 2:32 p.m.
The Bristol, Newcastle, and Nobleboro fire departments assisted Damariscotta at the scene. The Central Lincoln County Ambulance Service, Central Maine Power Co., Damariscotta Police Department, and Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office also responded.
A total of 38 firefighters responded, going through about 10,000 gallons of water and running 1,700 feet of large-diameter hose.
Firefighters cleared the scene at 4:56 p.m.
