PORTLAND, Maine — An impressive pitching performance helped the Portland Sea Dogs end a three-game losing streak with a 4-1 win over New Britain Rock Cats 4-1 Tuesday night at Hadlock Field.
William Cuevas (1-0), making his Double-A debut, was the first Sea Dogs pitcher of the year to go five innings in a start. He allowed one earned run on four hits, and got out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the third inning, allowing just one run on a wild pitch.
Offensively, the Sea Dogs got things going early on. After Mike Miller led off the bottom of the first with a double, Carlos Asuaje followed up with the first Sea Dogs triple of the season to give Portland a 1-0 lead. Jantzen Witte then added a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0.
Witte had another good night, going 1-for-3 with two RBIs, upping his season total to six RBIs in five games.
Portland’s Marco Hernandez led off the bottom of the second with a solo home run to make it 3-0, his first homer in Double-A. It would prove to be all the scoring the Sea Dogs would need, as the bullpen held solid.
Pat Light pitched two scoreless innings and struck out four, while Kyle Martin pitched the final two innings and picked up his first Double-A save as well as the first save for the Sea Dogs in 2015. Sea Dogs pitchers combined to strike out 10 Rock Cats.
