OLD ORCHARD BEACH, Maine — Witness reports that a yellow kayak disappeared off the coast of Old Orchard Beach Saturday afternoon triggered a search by area fire departments and the U.S. Coast Guard, who eventually found not a kayak but a “really good-sized’ mass of yellow sea algae.
Saco and Scarborough fire boats joined a boat from the Old Orchard Beach Fire Department in searching the area off Temple Avenue in Ocean Park for several hours Saturday, according to Capt. Norman Gendron of the Old Orchard Beach Fire Department.
The U.S. Coast Guard sent a 29-foot response boat to the area at about 2:41 p.m., and called off the search at approximately 4 p.m. when officials discovered the yellow sea algae, according to Operations Specialist First Class Christopher Kiener of Coast Guard Sector Northern New England in South Portland.
