DETROIT — Goaltender Petr Mrazek made 22 saves for his first career playoff shutout and the Detroit Red Wings earned a 3-0 win against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday night at Joe Louis Arena to take a 2-1 lead in the first-round series.

Centers Pavel Datsyuk, Riley Sheahan and Luke Glendening scored for Detroit and defenseman Jonathan Ericsson had two assists.

Goalie Ben Bishop, a former University of Maine star, made 18 saves for Tampa Bay.

Datsyuk opened the scoring 8:46 into the first period when left winger Tomas Tatar’s shot from the left point deflected in off the ankle of Datsyuk, who was going to the net in the slot.

It was Datsyuk’s second goal of the playoffs.

Sheahan’s power-play goal 6:42 into the third period made it 2-0. He put a backhander past Bishop as Sheahan skated across the top of the crease from left to right, after taking a pass from left winger Justin Abdelkader. It was Sheahan’s first career playoff goal.

Glendening added an empty-net goal in the final minute.

Mrazek denied center Brian Boyle on a shorthanded breakaway attempt 8:30 into the third and center Cedric Paquette’s backhand shot from the slot with about four minutes left in the second period.

Detroit killed off a 56-second two-man disadvantage early in the middle period. The Red Wings got some help when center Tyler Johnson hit the goal post during the two-man advantage, 6:06 into the second.

Detroit defenseman Marek Zidlicky hit the goal post 1:36 into the period.

Detroit right winger Darren Helm hit the crossbar 1:08 into the game. A puck hit the goal post behind Mrazek off the leg of Red Wings left winger Drew Miller around the 10-minute mark of the first.

Capitals 2, Islanders 1 (OT)

UNIONDALE, New York — Center Nicklas Backstrom scored with 8:51 left in overtime Tuesday night to lift the Washington Capitals to victory over the New York Islanders in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals at Nassau Coliseum.

With the win, the Capitals tied the best-of-seven series at 2-2. Game 5 is Thursday night in Washington, D.C.

Seconds before the game-winner, the Capitals won a faceoff in the Islanders’ zone. Backstrom’s shot went between the legs of right winger Joel Ward and past Islanders goalie Jaroslav Halak.

Left winger Alex Ovechkin scored in regulation for the Capitals while goalie Braden Holtby recorded 36 saves

Center Casey Cizikas scored in the first period to tie the game at one for the Islanders. Halak made 28 saves.

The Islanders were the more aggressive team early after starting hit-heavy fourth-line forwards Cizikas, Cal Clutterbuck and Matt Martin.

New York also had the first scoring threats after Ovechkin was whistled for tripping left winger Nikolay Kulemin just before the midway point of the period. But Holtby turned away a wraparound effort by center Anders Lee and stick-less Backstrom blocked a shot by defenseman Nick Leddy.

The Capitals went up with 6:54 left in the opening period. After winning a faceoff, the puck ended up with defenseman John Carlson, whose shot ticked off Ovechkin and past Halak.

The Islanders tied it with just 12.6 seconds remaining when a shot by Clutterbuck seemed to take a funny bounce as it skittered toward Holtby. Cizikas swooped and put back the rebound for New York.

The Islanders outshot the Capitals 15-6 in the second period but failed to score on three power plays.

In the third period, Halak made a pair of impressive saves on point-blank power-play shots by Ovechkin and left winger Marcus Johansson, with the latter’s shot at an open being snagged by the goalie.

The Islanders had an even better chance seconds before a power play expired, when Clutterbuck raced up the right side of the ice and fired a shot that bounced off the crossbar and out.
